That would be in my top 5, even top 3. A really fun and catchy song though I haven't listened to it on my own accord since that year weirdly until the other day. Rarely hear it on radio also but was great to see it go to 1. Everything after has been okay by him but nothing too great.

Not a fan of the Bingo Players song, but I do like the Alexis Jordan song Acid Rain which was released shortly after it.

I loved Love Me Again, that and follow up single Cheating were enough for me to buy his debut album.

"Love Me Again" is catchy and euphoric like a great dance tune should be. This is in my Top 10 at #6:

And having mentioned Rudimental in my last post here they are!

From this point on we’re into the realm of songs I love.

Waiting All Night was the fourth single from Rudimental’s debut studio album Home, it was Ella’s first UK chart single. It became Rudimental’s second of three UK number ones and Ella’s only one so far.

A mashup of the song with Bastille’s Pompeii was performed live by Rudimental, Eyre and Bastille at the 2014 Brit Awards and also reached 21 in the the UK.

It was awarded British Single Of The Year at that ceremony.

It’s a great uplifting dance record with Rudimental’s signature drum and bass prominent, though it’s perhaps not distinctive enough from Feel The Love to really stand out.

Ella’s warm soulful vocals are excellent, still the best thing she’s done in my opinion. I love the brass bursting forward and the pace changes into the energetic chorus. I do also like that it feels a bit darker in its tone than their previous hits.

Another fantastic dance number 1 of 2013!

My biggest takeaway from 'Get Up (Rattle)' is the ducks in the music video *.* I'd have the song itself a bit lower, but not bad.

I really enjoyed 'Love Me Again' at the time (it even topped my personal chart) and still think it was a strong, soulful solo launch, but am not as keen as back then. I was amazed to find out how popular it still is around the world, with over 1 billion streams on Spotify 😮

John Newman followed by his ex Ella Eyre! 'Waiting All Night' gets pretty repetitive but I do enjoy the vocal and D&B production. That aforementioned BRITs was a great one for those collaborative performances, with the Lorde/Disclosure one too 🤩

John Newman's 'Love Me Again' was another song that I loved in 2013. I think it would be number 1 for me.

It's interesting how varied the Number 1 singles were in 2013 compared to now. I think it was probably the last good year we had for chart pop. The further we get into this decade, the smaller the countdown will be as songs would be stuck at Number 1 for months.

For me it declined after 2014. 2014 is my favourite pop year of the 2010's with loads of brilliant songs.

I think I preferred 'Rattle' as an instrumental, although I don't mind the FEM version. The video's funny! (If slightly disturbing)

I think 'Love Me Again' is great, a very strong proper debut single indeed. It felt like he never really lived up to the promise he showed after this, especially as the follow-up single was a total dud.

'Waiting All Night' is very decent, but I quickly got sick of it and it didn't go away for a long time.

'Waiting All Night' is pretty good. One I grew to like much more when checking out Ella's solo material. Her album was good too, shame her career never amounted to much bigger things outside of dance collabs really.

Waiting All Night and Love Me Again were both faves of my mum at the time! I prefer 'Waiting All Night' of the two, great energy and vocal.

“Waiting All Night” and “Love Me Again” are both in the quite like zone for me, so not complaining that they’ve missed the top 10. I think they’re both good up to a point and then don’t do anything to really make them interesting. “Love Me Again” the vocals are all a bit on one level without light and shade, and the other the chorus gets a little repetitive.

I feel about the same, both songs are good but I think the placings are about right, and I'd also have 'Waiting All Night' as the higher of the two.

Need U & Waiting All Night are both pretty decent (fell victim to Kiss FM overplay so I had to avoid them for a bit), but in both cases, I just find they pale in comparison to their best work, one we've already seen and the other which we'll see next year x I quite like the drama and strong vocals of Love Me Again, though everything he did after was pretty rubbish.

I have to appreciate Animals for being to this date, the last (almost) fully instrumental number 1 (I hope I've not forgotten anything) in an era where they were extremely rare, it's very of it's time and his work after it was pretty sub-standard, but have always enjoyed it and was another club anthem at uni.

We Can't Stop was definitely a significant, year-defining song and marked a huge watershed moment for Miley Cyrus as an artist a bit like similar pop girls like Christina and Britney a decade earlier though this one a bit more overt, ultimately it was by far for the better and she'd produce some great work, but I've never really liked it much as a song though even outside of all the discourse and the MTV performance etc., it's a bit too plodding and her voice a bit strained. I do think her next one to come is much, much better though.

Get Up (Rattle) has a pretty iconic video and while I generally did not like these rent-a-rappers shouting all over a popular dance instrumental which seemed to become a thing briefly (more on that next year x), I didn't think this one is too bad and it's a good bit of disposable fun while it's on. There's another similar one week wonder that feels a bit forgotten that I'm surprised is still to come but pleased to see it as it's one I've always really liked.

10 Look Right Through - Storm Queen

Into the top 10 and we arrive at my biggest revelation on listening through the 2013 number ones. When I first saw this song on the list I admit I didn’t really remember it at all, however hearing it again I was very pleasantly surprised.

Look Right Through is a song by the American record producer Morgan Geist with vocals by Damon C. Scott. It had a bit of a convoluted journey though, it was originally released in October 2010, and first remixed in 2012. Then late in 2013, Ministry of Sound re-released the song with new remixes, and the vocal remix by MK became the most successful version in the UK and this took it to number one. Like a lot of dance record successes at the time it had been very popular in the European islands over the summer, building anticipation ahead of its relaunch. It also became a true ‘one hit wonder’.

I note that this is one of a few relatively unexpected, often dance related, number ones towards the year end. This was, in recent years, what had traditionally become the home of a parade of songs which were massive hits off the back of X Factor guest appearances. I think the waning of that influence allowed some great songs to peak higher.

Listening again this is essentially right up my street. I love the minimalist house styling which is almost late eighties sounding and also the synths especially in the chorus. With great vocals and all round upbeat vibe it’s no wonder it became popular over the summer.

Still surprised (but very happy) it made number one, especially amongst such big selling songs at that time.

It’s a great song though!
