‘Need U’ is a song by the British musician and DJ, real name Adam George Dyment, and features the vocals from Sierra Leonean-born British singer A*M*E, it was both artists first UK number one. It was also co written by MNEK

This is a great deep house song that sounds like it comes straight from peak early 90s Detroit Techno, like a long lost Inner City song. All great punchy ‘piano’, rumbling bass and soulful vocals. Dumont’s next single is probably even better though.

Absolutely love this, although it must be most known these days as the one that blocked 'Ding Dong' from reaching #1.

Tbh Duke Dumont has barely ever put a foot wrong for me, he deserved many more hits.

I was 8 or 9 when Hannah Montana premiered so grew up with Miley and idolised her as a kid, even going to her tour in 2009! I remember some scandals pre-dating 'We Can't Stop', like quite an adult photoshoot she did while still a teenager and a bong controversy, but as you say 'We Can't Stop' was shedding the Disney Channel star image once and for all - with a visual transition to boot now she had very short, blonde hair instead. I think she's blossomed into a great artist but really didn't know what to make of that shift at the time. 'We Can't Stop' is another song that reminds me of my prom and is thankfully less tainted than 'Blurred Lines' but it's merely okay musically, the next single was indeed better.

I really like 'Need U (100%)' though! That's definitely my favourite to drop out so far. I'd actually forgotten that was the song to block 'Ding-Dong The Witch Is Dead' but do vividly remember the latter being announced at #2, with a news report to skirt around playing the song in full.

As for 2013 covers - I liked Lorde's atmospheric version of 'Everybody Wants to Rule the World'!

I was hooked on that Duke Dumont song when it came out and this would be in my top 5 of 2013. I am guessing this was the start of a deep house revival because I don't remember hearing anything else like this at the time.

I'm not a Miley Cyrus fan and it's clear that when she released 'We Can't Stop', it was an attempt to show how grown up she was and that her Hannah Montana days were behind her. However, all the antics with sitting naked on a wrecking ball and twerking on Robin Thicke came across as contrived and a bit desperate. I respect Miley more as an artist after that era as she is more grounded and her talent really shines through.

I thought the Duke Dumont song was very basic and fell a bit flat and didnt like it at the time. Same with most the rest of the deep house hits - I was used to house being uplifting/euphoric.

AMEs good vocal does make it a bit better than the other deep house #1 in 2013.

13 Get Up (Rattle) - Bingo Players Feat. Far East Movement.

Bingo Players are a Dutch house DJ and production duo and Get Up (Rattle) features vocals from American hip hop group Far East Movement. It is a revamped and vocal mix version of the Bingo Player's own 2011 song ‘Rattle’. It was both acts' first chart-topping hit in the UK.

As you’re probably realising by now, I’m a sucker for a big club banger and this is no exception. It’s a really enjoyable dance rap song, which was another surprising (certainly to me) chart topper from 2013.

It has a pounding beat (certainly ‘rattling’ my speakers) and great synths plus more ‘skronking’ horns (they were definitely a thing in 2013) and obviously the never ending party manifesto. It sounds like an older rave anthem. The raps, though generic, are energetic.

I particularly love the references to the wonderful Technotronic and a homage to them in the first bridge, then a later one to Black Eyed Peas in the last.

Nothing earth shattering but just a great dumb fun party song! And I’m a big fan of  dumb fun party songs!

Get Up (Rattle) is the one that was last for me too, very annoying track for me.

Need You (100%) is quality, 2013 was such an interesting year for songs that sound quite underground house getting to No.1.

Yes I agree, I really love that song!

I prefer the Duke song from the next year to this one by some way but this one is alright too. Am realising that I don't love a huge amount of 2013 #1's here oops.

Bingo Players is rather meh and nothing special.

Very fun songs recently, I think 'Need U (100%)' and 'Get Up (Rattle)' are great different sides of the dance coin here. Agree very much with 'Get Up' in particular just being a dumb fun song.

Would have put 'Wake Me Up' a lot higher, I think that's probably going to be my most played of the songs of this list if not possibly my favourite, very repeatable dance song that I was always into. 'We Can't Stop' and 'Animals' on the other hand I was always very bored by, never got the appeal of either and still think them very poor efforts. Personally.

I've been following this, but have some catching up to do with my own comments!

'Counting Stars' I quite like with its impulsive rhythm, despite however much it became overplayed (a common theme with several of these songs!) When I started tracking these stats in autumn 2018, it still had one of the 10 longest consecutive runs in the Top 75, and did most of that run before streaming counted, which was no mean feat.

With 'What About Us' it felt like all the stops had been pulled out to get The Saturdays a #1, regardless of how distinctively it sounded like them - 'All Fired Up' was their best song for me. I quite like the verses to 'Under Control' but the chorus and drop are rather disappointing, and it sounds to me more like an Alesso song than a Calvin one. I've never been keen on 'Burn' and find it almost painfully generic.

And as for 'Happy' - not sorry, this would possibly top the list for me, or at least it's very close with another song yet to come! I just find the short intro and verses such a kick of energy, with plenty happening off the beat. Love to read all those achievements it had, one of the last mega-selling hits of the download era.

'Wake Me Up' is another of my favourites of the year, maybe as high as #3 for me, again despite overplay - and this sort of country crossover dance sound would perhaps go on to inspire a number of imitations, including an even longer running chart hit for Myles Smith - but here the yearning lyrics and vocals are truly compelling. Although as I mentioned earlier it was 'Hey Brother' that would become one of my top favourites of the decade.

'Animals' is a unique sounding #1 and perhaps the last instrumental (if we will) ever to get there, though I never really got into it. I still prefer it to 'We Can't Stop', which just sounded me like Miley was trying too hard to present the opposite of her Hannah Montana image. I'm not that keen on her other 2013 #1 either, but would like a few of her songs from 2017 onwards.

'Need U (100%)' is a passable dance hit, though I remember it mostly for keeping 'Ding-Dong!...' at #2, and for launching Duke Dumont's career. I was fairly sure 'Get Up (Rattle)' would be the one Till had at #31! The riff is a little earwormy, though it would sound very out of place as a chart topper in most later years.

We Can’t Stop was released as the lead single from Miley’s fourth studio album Bangerz, and was her first UK number one.

In common with seemingly many of the number ones by female artists in this era, We Can’t Stop had apparently been offered to Rihanna first, I feel it really suits Miley though. The track also includes a sample of the track ‘La Di Da Di’ by Doug E. Fresh and MC Ricky D.

It’s an R&B influenced electro pop song whose lyrics focus on house parties, recreational drug use, and living life unapologetically.

I love the bittersweet contrast of having lyrics about a hedonistic party but musically, instead of a club banger, it has slower moodier almost sad vibe.

With hindsight it obviously marked Miley’s progression from her Disney Hannah Montana persona to an edgy mature pop star, moving from the ‘Party In The USA of her childhood to this new adult ‘party’.

The music video is a bit weird and also seemingly intentionally provocative. It features rebellious behaviour designed to shock, but to also shed her former child-star image.

It was additionally promoted with the aforementioned highly controversial performance at the 2013 MTV Video Music awards, involving a provocative duet with Robin Thicke which I won’t discuss again here, aside from saying that the ensuing publicity certainly helped propel Miley’s career.

At times, especially with the pitch changed intro, it feels a bit strange. At other times it’s simplistic but with a great rebellious message, live your life to the full without worrying about what others think. It was a brave risky move to provoke in this way, but it certainly paid off.

Miley would be back very soon with an even better song…
