The Woolies market has already moved on - if I can't get a CD I go online as I suspect most do these days. For those of us near a Supermarket, it is much cheaper to buy CDs. I only buy CDs in town if I happen to be there and see something I cba to buy online :P

I don't this will have a huge effect, personally.

This really has been a tad under-publicised given how iconic Woolworths is on our High Streets. Very sad, because although their selection was diminishing constantly, they were still the best for finding VERY cheap deals on albums only a couple of years old or so.

Agreed, i love Woolies for that!

I actually purchase most of my music online these days, its like doing your weekly food shopping online, which I don't do, as I prefer to see what food is fresh.

And as a sidenote, there is Woolies in other countries, its worldwide. I guess these will be affected.

There's not that many is there? I know it's an American company originally, but there are none over there anymore, and I think they spun the UK group off sometime in the 80s.

It was inevitable. Woolworths has been directionless for years.

Not so long ago they were the market leaders in core areas: music, confectionery, children's toys, children's clothing.

Their response to the specialist stores, internet and supermarkets in each area has been to run away from the competition and reduce their range. Big mistake. Stock is more limited and very poorly presented.

They should have built on and defended their existing strengths, rather than retreating. The stores lack focus and identity. They lack inspiration and any feeling of quality. The directors are entirely to blame.

they need to cut down drastically on a number of stores. I mean 800 is silly. I have 3 near me, that are all within 3 miles of each other.

Then they need to do a McDonald's-esque makeover in the stores that they keep. The shops at the moment just look old fashioned and cheap.

New directors too!

:o

Woolies is the biggest nonTesco shop in Cupar :o :o :o :o

It can't go

I always used to buy my singles in Woolies, right up until i moved to Dundee

Musicwise they only do chart albums, and that is limited stock.

It's mainly that, plus dvds and computer games in the entertainment section.

My parents first met whilst working in a Woolworths. Dad was the manager and mum worked on the Deli. They are both sad to see it go the way it has

i have never ever heard of a Wollies having a Deli.

I <3 Wollies, it was one of my favourite childhood stores, i dunno what happend to it though.

Another blow to the music industry.

Oh dear, the end of the world is near  And I thought C+ is in crisis now for a new administration, but with Woolies closed I guess HMV will die soon :( And this is the end of the best era of selling music cd singles  No more comments, too sad for this situation where mp3 c**p gains control <_< xox.

No Offence all but Woolies is Utter Cr*p in it's present state!!!

There's a few locally within 10 miles and They are all rubbish..There's always stock lying everywhere, Shelving broken, sweets all aver the place..And the layout is awful...It's like one big Car boot!

We need to see more stores Like Zavvi & HMV...

We have just got a New Zavvi in town and It's brilliant & always packed.

I used to Love Woolworths but it seems to have gone down hill now..They don't seem to actually hold set product ranges now it's just random stuff everywhere..They should seriously change their stock and close some stores to make extra income and Re-open some with Better merchandise!

They should also Ditch their homeware as it's utter Rubbish!

Hopefully They will manage to Stay open as on the Whole it's a classic store and Many people will be lost without it me included.

It's a shame as in the last year they obviously have been losing money so havn't bothered to sort the issues out!

I remember when if Woolworths didn't stock your single it was highly unlikely to go top 10. They had soooo much power in the market

I don't think HMV is struggling...

I know they have outed singles in most of the smaller stores but they are one of the only online stores to stock recent singles...

There sales are actually quite impressive for singles online, that's probably why they have removed them from stores as they sell far better online.

I honestly think that if there were doing poor they would close the stores down and keep their website as their prices are cheap shipping from Jersey like Play.com.

You would be surprised the albums sell far more physical copies than downloads as people prefer to have an actual CD when spending £8-9,although in the future this is more than likely to change.

Downloads are seriously taking over now..I fear in the future people will have never heard of a Physical Cd! :P

Well I'm secretly quite pleased about it as it only ever seems to have the big chart albums in there so unless you want the Westlife album there is never anything decent in there, I bought a CD for the first time in ages there when they did the Out Of Control + Girls A Live deal  The thing that always annoys me about it is how much they push the X Factor and charity singles in there! It's where the zombies flock because they have to buy what they've been spoonfed.

I love woolies...will be a shame to see it go :(

I used to buy so many of my singles from there and find it absoloutely great for most things...especially Pic N Mix :kink:

Hopefully the Felixstowe one will stay open, because its usually quite busy but i doubt it :(

(and btw. the Ipswich one has a Cafe, maybe you meant that r.e. the Deli)

Thats a real big shame

First they get rid of singles

Then they bring out different systems for Music purchasing

Now they are closing Woolworths.

They were a big part of the charts :( This is wrong

I never found the wollies in ipswich lol, i was in ipswich on monday and was looking for it but failed to find it :( the one in colchester is always too warm, i've fainted in there once because of the heat :drama:

I was in there this week and they had TWO singles ... and you can guess what they were.

X-Factor Finalists and Leona Lewis.
