I'm sorry, Cage may be a music genious, but silence is silence even if it's a score instructing an instrument play NOT TO PLAY a single note.

It's a very very dodgy concept, and I'm not sure people would stand behind it if Simon Cowell came up with it.

It's all a bit like saying water has taste because it tastes like water.

My opinion is that 4'33" is not art.

(I'm late on this debate, yes. I'm typing on my mobile... Uff)

I'd say this is a fair opinion, as the real 4"33 debate is that, if a musical composition has no musical notes, does that still make it a musical composition? (and obviously in your opinion it does not).

It was definatly an interesting idea John Cage was trying to put across, infact I think part of his point was for people to ask themselves is silence art? can the natural sounds of the enviroment be music?

Even though 'Many of Horror' isn't one of my favourite songs, it's far better than Matt's version. -_-
Biffy have got a successive top 40s records to out most bands these days to shame... admittedly cos the odd one hasn't charted at all, but still
exactly if cowell came up with 4'33 it would be a gimmick, as it is john cage it is art.

Cowell has never 'come up' with anything original, the fact he just puppets his 'artists' and always does the same thing is why music fans don't like him.

Put it this way, what do you think Matt would rather be doing, making Biffy sound like Westlife and other things like that or write and perform his own music?

Glad to see the original in the top ten

Well seeing how angry some people are getting on here, I would call it an argument

or a different(more mature imo) point of view....

thank you Matt, one of the problems in this forum is that anyone who states an opinion that doesnt conform to the majority it is automatically someone trying to start an arguement.

I'm not getting angry, and anyone who is needs to calm down, arent we here to discuss things in the first place? no one is forcing people to reply to me, if you do reply to me, i'll reply back, that;s how discussion works and i'm sorry if people have an issue with that.

however we have got a bit off topic lol.

I quite agree! You haven't been annoyed at all Chris - you are making an effort to have a discussion, as are the majority of others with alternate opinions. This makes this site worth it for me!

Its not really off topic - its does relate to music and a track on the chart.

Well, its mutual :D What did you mean then? The whole point of this site is to discuss things - no point crying argument when people actually have a contrary opinion.

And yes silence isn't possible, read what ShakyFan said about the track.

I meant I didn't want to go into a sub-argument/discussion (for you) about whether this was an argument or discussion. Just some people were flinging personal insults at each other, which isn't really a discussion in any way.

I did skip past his post as he did post earlier that anyone who didn't have the same opinion as him was a bell-end. :teresa:

I hope next year's X Factor winner's single is a cover of 4"33.

This is comparible to alot of modern art pictures (of slabs of plain colour) - are they art?

Would have thought Biffy Clyro would have got higher than 8.

I predicted 8 in the chart game, going off Beyonce's re-entry in 2008 with "Listen" as basis

Was that a live version of Many Of Horror? It didn't sound... right.
Yes, the key change in the Cowell version would be interesting

I do think people can be a bit nasty about Simon Cowell sometimes, but the key changes are VERY annoying. I mean, don't get me wrong, most artists use key changes, but his are just so cliche. At the same time in each of the songs, and they're so obvious. Other artists usually do it so that you don't even notice it unless you're really concentrating.

I mean, key changes for the final chorus are what 11 year-olds are taught to do in Music lessons at school. It's a good technique, and used in a lot of classic songs, but we've all heard it now, and when you do it in EVERY song, it's just annoying.

Sorry, had to get this rant out.

I hope next year's X Factor winner's single is a cover of 4"33.

 in that case, it will probably be number one!

Would have thought Biffy Clyro would have got higher than 8.

it didn't really have the support of the official Biffy forums which might have pulled it up a bit, majority there didn't really care despite the discussion about the XF version being inferior which is obviously true

A green-eyed beauty with a sultry voice, Rihanna was discovered as a teenager on her island home of Barbados, and quickly signed with the venerable Def Jam records. Powered by a Soft Cell sample, her infectious dancehall/Caribbean single "Pon de Replay," from her album the MUSIC OF THE SUN, became the summer jam of 2005, peaking at number two on the charts. By 2006 she had become a worldwide sensation, and her second album, A GIRL LIKE ME, went platinum, boosted by a Nike ad song, guest appearances on ALL MY CHILDREN, and a film part in BRING IT ON: ALL OR NOTHING. Further success followed with 2007's double platinum GOOD GIRL GONE BAD, which spawned the all conquering "Umbrella" - topping the UK singles chart for ten weeks in the summer of that year. - HMV

I agree that he hasnt done anything original BUT what if he did. Would we be saying its art ? NO

So how come when someone else does, then it is.

Its a double standard

or a different(more mature imo) point of view....

I can't make sense of that. That doesn't relate to the quote of mine you used.

but we haven't a clue what matt will come up with. he may very well want to take more of a controling force in his music. he plays guitar and i think writes songs so he may want to include this in the music he releases in the future.
