Posted July 30, 20195 yr H8tS5UQmNQM PIh2xe4jnpk It's 5 years since the 'foregone conclusion' of a chart battle between Cheryl's 'Crazy Stupid Love' and MAGIC's 'Rude'. :kink: 'Crazy Stupid Love' was the lead to Cheryl's fourth studio album, Only Human, and features a rap from Tinie Tempah. The song's built on drumbeats and handclaps and incorporates an on-trend saxaphone breakdown. It's rumoured to have been turned down by Kylie, as was the follow-up 'I Don't Care'. 'Rude' was the debut single by Canadian group MAGIC!. The song fuses reggae and pop, describing a rocky process of a man asking his partner's father for her hand in marriage. Streaming had been incorporated into the official chart for little over a month and it allowed songs to chart solely on the strength of streams. This was the case for 'Rude', which had appeared as high as #50 on the chart ahead of its download release. Could its impressive streams give it the edge to beat 'Crazy Stupid Love', which was only available to stream upon download release? Upon the first midweek update, 'Crazy Stupid Love' had a lead of nearly 22k on 'Rude'. The margin decreased by the end of the week but MAGIC! had to settle for second best, with 107,845 compared to Cheryl's 118,145. Streaming did, however, make it much closer than it would have been if just sales were included ('Rude' was 18k behind on sales but 10k behind overall). It was just a matter of time before streaming would help a song make number one when it otherwise wouldn't... 'Rude' climbed to #1 the following week and has since shifted over 1.2m chart sales whilst 'Crazy Stupid Love' has 400k. 5 years on, which is your favourite?

July 30, 20195 yr Interestingly enough, the first chart I ever listened to was the one the week after this! (i.e. the one where MAGIC were #1). It was 4Music's Top 40 so not exactly the same but back then their top 10 was always the same as the Official Top 10. Not a massive fan of either song but Rude is really catchy and really reminds me of that summer holiday whilst the Cheryl one always felt a little unnecessary and a bit weird.
July 30, 20195 yr It has to be 'Rude' out of those two, definitely the song that deserved #1 (though it did get there the following week) and had we been deep in the streaming era it would easily have denied Cheryl a #1. Even at the time the sax breakdown on CSL sounded a bit naff and it didn't live up to her previous big singles. However the best new entry by far for me here is 'Always' - the unofficial follow-up to 'My Love' for Route 94 (whose remix of the track was the version being pushed). Sadly it was a very short-lived hit.
July 30, 20195 yr I'm not overly fussed on either of them, but I voted 'Rude' on the basis it's aged better and is still quite popular.
July 30, 20195 yr the answer is Neither, both a 0/10 :D any other song in that top 10 is better, especially Budapest and Ghost
July 30, 20195 yr One of my favourite #psychic7 moments  anywho picked Crazy Stupid Love, which is at least naff in a fun way, Rude is just crap rly Boom Clap wins out of this entire chart week though  plus shoutout to La Roux - Uptight Downtown, another summer fave that came out the same week
July 30, 20195 yr I don’t go back to Rude much but easily that. Cheryl’s song was awful. I’m pretty sure only die hard GA fans would vote for it here.
July 30, 20195 yr Rude is pretty good but I've always loved Crazy Stupid Love and not understood why it's quite so hated! So catchy and never got old for me, one of my defining songs of probably my favourite year of music.
July 30, 20195 yr Cheryl. While it is a tacky song, 'Rude' is just plain annoying and the whole coercive control element of it lyrically is creepy. I agree that 'Always' is the highlight of this flashback though. Both that and the Neon Jungle track were robbed of top 10. I remember being in Ibiza as this chart was unveiled!
July 30, 20195 yr It seems so crazy to think there was a time not that long ago when Cheryl was nigh-on guaranteed #1 after #1 and seemed unstoppable, and now she couldn't even get arrested.
July 30, 20195 yr I remember hating them both very strongly at the time so the fact they both ultimately topped the chart was most displeasing. Having heard RUDE a few times recently it's sounding actually quite alright whereas the cheryl track remains trash.
July 30, 20195 yr Rude feels so forgotten now! I preferred that at the time but I feel like this is one of the rare occasions where a Cheryl song has actually aged quite nicely.
July 30, 20195 yr 'Rude' hasn't aged well but it's still clearly the better of the two. Though I'd still take 'Crazy Stupid Love' in a heartbeat over the horror that would follow it from Cheryl.
