200 additional people bizarrely chose to buy that drippy Westshite single and a dance classic is denied #1 despite climbing up the chart more than once which was as rare as a blue moon in 1999.

It's so scandalous it deserves a whole ass Netflix series detailing the story.

Better Off Alone wasn’t just kept off the top by Westlife. It had three weeks at #2 also behind Ronan Keating (When You Say Nothing At All) and Geri Halliwell (Mi Chico Latino)

That simply deepens the scandal!!!!

Would love to have seen how well Westlife would have done in an oaos era!

The Woolies chart (which was reasonably good at predicting what would happen many weeks), put Alice Deejay at 1 the week Geri was released, but she trounced them ultimately.

The Westlife week was easily the best chance for Better Off Alone, I was gutted when I saw how close it was in the end. Westlife were so close to never even getting their opening run of seven No.1s off to any sort of start. Still, I suspect the radio edit not being on the CD single cost it a LOT of sales and quite likely the No.1, how many other singles in the 90s sold 600k with no radio edit on the biggest selling format? It did astoundingly well considering.

In that case I am gutted too as they stole Spice Girls record! Always wished they’d had an attempt at the 1999 Xmas number one as that also would have cut off their seven in a row if they succeeded blocking them (and might have made them avoid releasing their album same week as forever the following year!)

It is currently looking like this (allegedly)

1) Steps

2) Madonna

3) Aitch

No sales though but apparently it is “very close” !!!

I hope Demi can get a top 10 with this album. It's the album of the year for me and it'd be a shame if it failed to go top 10! Can't see why it wouldn't though!

I would have thought she is safe for a top 5.

I can't cope with that "very close" I am hoping they mean between them and Madonna as I can't see her team doing anything extra to push for the #1 while Steps' team will do. If Aitch is also very close his streaming power gives him a very good chance.

Aitch has just (well in the last hour) put on signed copies of his album/ an exclusive spray painted CD thing onto his store.

But i'm guessing Steps will be doing similar things/ price drops etc

If the others are very close to Steps then surely they will have a battle on their hands - they outweigh both Madonna and Aitch massively on formats - they’ve added signed individual band member personalised CDs to their site today.

They need to wheel out the £4.99 price reductions sharpish if they have a chance of being caught.
