Oh that definitely is a surprise, although it does show just how strong this top 5 is when a song as perfect as Ray Of Light can only make 5th

Oh come on!!!

I was the one to give Ray of Light an 11.

It's Top 3 Madonna (was my fave song of hers for a long time) and is defo the best on this album.

Excuse me whilst I quietly fume!!!

'Swim' is perfection. I would have placed it a little higher but it's splitting hairs at this point.

Quite.

what an incredible back-to-back there with 'Swim' and 'Skin'.

04. Drowned World / Substitute for Love // 9.25 average

Highest: three 11s, six 10s // Lowest: two 7s

Also here to show love ad infinitum  two brilliant and completely different tracks starting the top 5! I prefer the title track but I know DW has its huge fans so I expected massive things for it here.

Now we have the perfect top 3 too?

I always thought Drowned World was an odd opener for Ray of Light... but actually I can't imagine it fitting well anywhere else on the album now (except maybe as the closer).

The video was obviously a bit controversial due to it's comparisons to Princess Diana in Paris.

It's a great song (but it's shouldn't be higher than ROL!!)

'Ray of Light' just missed out on my 11 in favour of 'Frozen' even though it has long been my favourite from the album (and will probably alternate with 'Frozen' from here on). I can't remember if it was this or 'Music' that was my first introduction to Madonna but it was definitely 'Ray of Light' that had the biggest effect on me. I can only have been 4 or 5 years old but I remember the frantic, chaotic production and the soaring vocals really standing out to me, as did that eye-catching music video. I think everyone has a different image in their head when they first think about Madonna and the look in this video is definitely 'my' Madonna.

Interesting to see 'Drowned World' ahead of 'Ray of Light' though, it does seem that there has been more attention given to it over the years (I think being the lesser-performing single of the album meant it was often overlooked). I remember we sent it as one of our songs in the Artist Forum Song Contest and it was incredibly well-received there. It's the perfect opening track; I just love the ambient, submerged sounds at the beginning, like a sonar searching through the depths of the dark sea or what the outside world might sound like from within the womb. It's a very special track.

Amazing!! So deserved to be a single. I love the "travelling down their own road" lyric, it's pure atmospheric euphoric bliss.

I heard this played in a club last weekend :o

Interesting that many of you are saying that 'Sky Fits Heaven' should have been a single because there's a reason why it wasn't. The song was based on a poem by Max Blagg who agreed to let Madonna use parts of his poem for the song under the condition that it wouldn't be released as a single.

Oh I didn't know that, explains a lot though.

It had remixes that were promoted to clubs so I assume they must have recognised its potential there

If that is the case, it doesn't even make logical sense to me. The song is still gonna be out there and heard by millions of people, what difference would it make if it's a single?

Why wouldn't the poet want the royalties?

Im sure Drowned World in contract had to be a single and was released in UK!
