They more or less have actually :(

They made a comment once how around the Aphrodite era they perceived her as being passé.

Someone on Popjustice said they heard a girl in her 20s request All the Lovers a few weeks ago saying Kylie was her favourite artist and the presenter (I think Greg James) was shocked and said he would play it even though Kylie “obviously isn’t a Radio 1 artist”.

Edit: here’s the post https://forum.popjustice.com/threads/kylie-...91/post-8916467

Wow, really? That is just SHOCKING. They are trying to dictate what young people like hun.

Just Carol Honey ❤️

Dua was a climber and they didn't play her either WTF

Ageism!!!!!!!!1 :arrr:

Ageism!!!!!!!!1 :arrr:

I know you’re being sarcastic but it would track with their history of dropping British female artists after about 2 albums

It was Cliff Richard who first brought up the ageism issue with radio 1 when Millenium Prayer was number one.
Seems like a very deliberate choice considering they’re fully aware of the backlash they’re about to receive on social media! They’re just so stubborn on this

Hardly when the facts show your arguement to be totally wrong, they played her in the last two Friday charts!

Yes it’s strange to skip that in the First Look today especially when it’s a chance to show some further mix of non playlist songs but there’s no evidence of the accusations you are making.

As I see it, this long thread isn't just the ramblings of Kylie stans with a chip on their shoulder. It's the sound of a can of worms being (re)opened that has been closed for way too long.

Radio stations, and the people who decide what goes onto prominent curated playlists, really need to stop being ageist. It's always been an issue but seems to have got quite a bit worse over time. Take a look at this chart from October 1998:

https://www.officialcharts.com/charts/singl.../19981025/7501/

The average age of the top four was over 40, and I'm pretty sure Radio 1 were playing all of them, including 52-year-old Cher with the biggest selling single of the year.

It's got a lot worse since then though, with older acts, especially women, shunted onto Radio 2 without discussion and moved into the 'legacy' pile, as if they will never have a hit again. Why can't songs just be playlisted or added high up major playlists on merit? If you've got a veteran artist in their 50s or older putting out a relevant career highlight, should that be shoved aside for consideration (and not even a spot play when it's soaring the charts while everything around it falls) due only to their age? And should the latest single by a big young star always be a- or b-listed without question if actually it's not very good and showing little sign of catching on with the public? Would they rather not play songs that listeners want to hear? They could be more dynamic and chuck stuff off more quickly if it's clear it doesn't have a good audience reception, or they could even extend the playlist back to the length it was 20 years ago to accommodate more variety, both in sound and age of the performer.

Nerina Pallot, who has written for Kylie, has just Tweeted about it now:

I do think the lack of playlisting is the much more prominent issue than just the lack of play on the chart update last night though. And the attitude of presenters showing surprise when a listener requests a song from an artist deemed by Radio 1 to be over the hill doesn't help.

Why is Kylie obviously not a Radio 1 artist - as per that Popjustice post above? What other than her age is not Radio 1 friendly about Padam Padam, I'd really love to know.

I don't get why people think R1 airplay = hit? Artists can get hits in so many ways! There are several hits mentioned even in this thread that weren't playlisted by R1, like I Ain't Worried and Shallow.

Isn't Kylie #2 on airplay currently? The song IS a hit!

Actually The Beatles did the ageism card a few years earlier with ‘Real Love’, famously covered for a John Lewis advert

Way predates that- Here's Status Quo complaining about Radio 1 not playing their song way back in 1996 Status Quo and Radio 1

Oh wow - great start for Louise in the albums, wasn’t expecting to see it that high!

Really good start for Jake too - his last solo album reached #19 so hopefully he won’t drop too much and can get a 2nd Top 20.

Jake has released a digital download with 7 extra tracks on his website for £4.99 (Louise has done the same) so could pull in a few extra sales for them both.

Close between the top two, although I was never able to call how that battle would go, so it's not a surprise.

Would love to see Sophie and Louise hold their top ten positions! Sophie really reignited her career with the Kitchen Discos, good to see the goodwill spreading to her first new studio album since the pandemic.

Thought Noel would easily get the #1 this week, wasn't expecting it to be that close! Looking forward to seeing the sales.

Unexpectedly great start for Sophie and Louise too.

Louise has enough hits for a Greatest Hits compilation??

12 top 20 hits + songs from her comeback album + new songs + reimagined versions of her hits and Eternal songs = more than enough
