I know this is a really redundant comment to make because it happens every year, but it never fails to baffle me 160,000 people think they want to play Christmas music as soon as November 1st hits. It genuinely didn't even cross my mind yesterday that we'd even exited Halloween yet.

Is it not loads of shopping centres using the playlists which adds to the numbers?

Does Spotify promote Xmas songs from 1st Nov or do people search them out? Apple still has the Halloween songs on their homepage!

That’s irrelevant to the fact that their numbers this year are worse than last year as the lack of campaigning applies on both years and the performance of the other songs is static y-o-y or better in Ariana’s case

I don’t know if this has had any impact, but the group that normally campaigns on behalf of ‘Last Christmas’ - starting from the end of October, haven’t really pushed it this year - and certainly nothing before 9pm last night.

On the other hand, I have seen so many UK people on Insta posting the Mariah catchphrase: ‘It’s Time.’

The spread of performance between the songs would suggest to me that there's a meaningful organic element to it versus Spotify just throwing Christmas music en masse at people, or businesses turning on playlists. As we get closer to Christmas and people/businesses just throwing on Christmas playlists becomes more prominent, we will see the Christmas songs clump together quite closely, but for now, Mariah at #31 while Brenda Lee is at #145 would suggest to me that this is mostly driven by individuals seeking out particular Christmas songs they like.

Thanks, do you know if the Spotify homepage is promoting Xmas music yet?

How many tens of thousands of shopping centres do you have that it makes a noticeable difference? I'd think the sharp movements feel more in line with general streaming though. Shops aren't going to go up and down with the amount of Christmas music they play for the next 2 months.

It's not even legal for shops to use regular Spotify though so they'd have to either use their auxiliary service (which might not count), or something else.

I wonder if Lily will be the one in prime position to benefit from the January boost?

I wouldn't rule out 'Pussy Palace' getting there in the new year tbh...

I thought it might of been Skye Newman too in contention but her streams are declining now.

So Lily looks the most likely, along with Olivia reappearing high in the chart too.

I'm still holding out that RAYE may be able to get a week at #1 but it'll depend on ACR and if she can stay on SCR whilst Taylor/Kpop Demon hunters go to ACR. Shame RAYE's 2nd album isn't release for a while yet otherwise if her album was coming out in the next few weeks I could see that boosting it to #1!

Well... Mariah starting out further ahead of Wham! than she did last year, and that's about as much of a fill of anything interesting happening in the chart as we're going to get for the next 2 months. x

I was anticipating it but still aw that the boost for 'Berghain' was just for a day and it's back to lower than it was before now. I guess there's still quite a lot of Halloween stuff ahead that'll probably all be gone tomorrow so hopefully it can still stick to the top 200 then or failing that be back in on Tuesday when newer songs tend to recover.

It may be illegal, but I have seen first hand public places using Spotify for their music (and no, not just once before anybody says that...), so it might be more prevalent than we think, especially in restaurants, bars, corner shops, etc. If you're not part of a big chain especially.

Apple:

#115 Wham! - Last Christmas

#169 Mariah Carey - All I Want for Christmas is You

My suspicion in any case is that it's a relative drop in the bucket, or something we wouldn't notice anyway mixed in with shops playing secular hit songs as well that all just cancels out together. I just feel like there's always this temptation to connect an unapproved chart development as a fix being up, rather than just the reasonable possibility that other Spotify users have different priorities to oneself. Auto-play, playlists & inorganic TikTok trends help everything except my faves, etc.

Is it really not legal for shops to play stuff via Spotify/streaming services? Can they obtain a license if they need it?

Lily dropping across the board today.

Has Ariana ever been the third highest Christmas song before?

At least Thriller is still hanging on by a narrow thread. Ophelia is catching up to Olivia

Well it had to happen at some point I guess. Still hoping Pussy Palace does enough to go top 10 on Friday though.
