21 Kim-Lian - Teenage Superstar

avg: 5.05

👑 Pop Royalty: 10 (Tafty), 9 (Scene)

Pop Flop: 0 (Julian_), 1 (Henessy Lake)

Say goodbye to Kim-Lian as she narrowly misses out on a top 20 placing with this 5.05 average for 'Teenage Superstar'.

Kim-Lian is a Dutch singer, actress and presenter who could be seen on TV from as young as 6 years old, as part of De Mini Playbackshow, essentially a similar concept to Stars In Their Eyes Kids. I am told from a Kim Wilde fan site that she imitated this fellow Kim with a performance of 'You Keep Me Hangin' On'. This would not be the only time their worlds collided as a cover of 'Kids In America' would end up on her debut album Balance. She continued to have minor TV roles in her home country and later hosted a chart programme there called Kids Top 20, for Jetix.

Away from TV work, Kim-Lian was signed to CMM Records and released 'Teenage Superstar' as her debut single at the age of 22. I had previously assumed she was an actual teenager! This pop-rock song was written by her husband Daniel Gibson and fellow Swedish songwriter Jörgen Ringqvist. It would reach the top 10 of her home country but did not make a splash in the U.K. so who knows why it was included on a British compilation otherwise filled with hits?! I've done some digging into my physical CD copy and the booklet mentions that this song is "exclusively licensed in the UK to AATW", which is the same message underneath Dannii Minogue v Flower Power - 'You Won't Forget About Me', so perhaps they agreed to Dannii on the condition that Kim-Lian was plonked on the compilation too. Evidently it didn't make too much of an impression, but I do have this song to thank for inspiring these rates in the first place. 'Teenage Superstar' was sent to the sixth edition of Bop Idol on here, an anonymous song contest. This inclusion sparked Pop Princesses chat in the relevant thread and voila, the idea to host this trilogy of nostalgic rates was born.

We're now up to 5+ averages albeit still not as high as Atomic Kitten's last place average in the first Pop Princesses rate. Tafty was the poster behind the aforementioned song contest entry so it's no surprise that he's the one attributed to Kim-Lian's highest score, a generous 10! On the flip-side, "poor little superstar" was a step too far for Julian_ in particular who gave this song a score of 0.

Talking of CBBC, before Verbalicious she was in a very poor BBC comedy which might as well have been for kids, All About Me with Jasper Carrott, Meera Syal and Nina Wadia. The Natalia lore never lets

There was a time I quite liked this but it’s not one I ever consider playing these days. At least she still has Play to come.

Wow... It was 16th in Bop Idol. Still a party bop for me (maybe it did well for being camp enough and fitting the theme).

I actually quite love this, but it's such tat really that I couldn't justify giving it a score higher than 7.

I remember at the time the music channels were really trying to push it but it just completely bombed in the UK. Looking at the release dates, it appears this compilation was released a month before this so maybe they were expecting big things as well?

Ah thanks for this insight, yeah that probably makes more sense than the prestige of securing both Minogue sisters on the compilation lol

I don't argue against these last 2. Both not really great, eventhough "Teenage Superstar" is not that bad and 2-3 other songs are in the same range. Verbalicious was by far the worst song on the compilation.

I think label handshakes used to happen a lot on compilations, so wouldn't really surprise me if AATW kindly persuaded Pop Princesses to take a chance on it as well as taking Dannii. Reminds me of that Fem@il song that was on so many compilations in summer 2000, including Now 46, despite not going top 40. It was on Jive, the same label as Britney, Backstreet Boys, Steps, who were all on there too...

The song is ok, quite catchy but not one I loved. Nice little throwback to the sound of the time though.

^ the difference being that the genius of Fe-m@il should have been a multi-week #1 whereas this Kim-Lian song is just ok of course xo

Didn't mind 'Teenage Superstar' too much in Bop but it's not one I'm going to go back and listen to outside of it. Didn't care for the Verbalicious track so a worthy last placer.

'Teenage Superstar' is such a random song from my memory that I just had to send it to Bop Idol one time lol It's very Avril 'The Best Damn Thing' era but it came out like 2-3 years before that did! 'Teenage Superstar' walked so 'Girlfriend' could run etc...

In that mid-00's era of pop-rock/punk it's so weird to me lmao. They were all clearly going for that Busted sound (more commercially pop vibe than Avril for example). So we ended up having McFly, Kim-Lian, The Faders, The Noise-Next Door, LoveBites all having their turns and only one stuck! All of them have bangers though. I've been toying with a couple as Bop Idol entries for a while though. Such a fun, nostalgic time for me.

20 Rachel Stevens - More, More, More

avg: 6.11

👑 Pop Royalty: (Viper*, Lee_J11, 777666jason), 8.5 (HarryInnanen)

Pop Flop: 2 (Julian_), 3 (Billy.)

Rachel Stevens demanded more, more, more so BuzzJackers increased this next average by over a whole point, with a 6.11 result bagging her a top 20 position.

Debut single 'Sweet Dreams My LA Ex' had been a success story from Rachel's debut album Funky Dory, but the title track did not light up the charts. Rachel followed up this blip with Sport Relief smash 'Some Girls' and capitalised on this momentum with a deluxe version of Funky Dory, which also featured a cover of 'More, More More', pencilled in as the next single. The original was released by adult film star turned disco diva Andrea True, more specifically credited to Andrea True Connection. This 1976 hit managed to chart in the top 5 across both sides of the Atlantic and was later sampled in '90s classic 'Steal My Sunshine' by LEN. Bananarama also got in on the action in 1993 with a Mike Stock and Peter Waterman make-over of the song. It was less successful for them, peaking at #24 here in the U.K., their last top 40 hit for 12 years.

Rachel stepped into the arena and casually delivered the highest charting version of 'More, More, More' in the U.K., when it reached #3, out-peaking the original by 2 spots. This was no mean feat in a week that featured a whopping seven new entries in the top 10, including Robbie's 'Radio' at the top, fellow Pop Princesses 2 hit 'Whatever U Want' by Christina Milian and even the much referenced Khia. 'More, More, More' was chosen to highlight Sky Sports' football coverage for the 2004-5 season, which was a smart move, as it helped propel Elton John's 'Are You Ready For Love?' to #1 the previous year. I associate it more with ScS sofa adverts though!

'More, More, More' could be found as song #3 on Pop Princesses 2, which feels appropriate, considering its chart peak and More x3 title.

Rachel particularly stole the hearts of Viper*, Lee_J11 and 777666jason who found this cover worthy of a 9. However, Julian_ didn't want any more of this, scoring it a 2.

Yeah this was never one I really enjoyed tbh. Some Girls and Sweet Dreams… are far superior. I’m guessing Some Girls wasn’t up for grabs being for Sports Relief and all?

Ooh Rachel should be higher even if its not her best , didnt realise it was a cover until @Spiceboy informed me of this 😮

Oh no, it's a terrible song all round tbh. 😂

Sorry, stop everything...

Verbalicious was that absolutely disgusting excuse of a woman that featured on NZ X Factor? And she has the NERVE to comment on someone else's artistry after releasing that absolute abomination? puke

If I had known, I would have given her a big fat 0.
