A vaguely interesting fun fact - today 30th July 2026 marks 20 years exactly that the last episode of Top Of The Pops was broadcast.

The last performance on TOTP was Chasing Cars by Snow Patrol. The last song featured was Hips Don’t Lie by Shakira. It would be a good pub quiz question if she does make no1 this week!

Willing Dai Dai to stay at No.1 but also surprised Sam and his team aren’t putting up more of a fight here? Maybe the Lewis duet version has some legal reason it can’t be released to download (his label didn’t approve it?), but why is Sam not armed at this point with remixes ready to go or the instrumental or something? Anything? I still wouldn’t be surprised to see him take it though as Shakira’s team don’t seem to be doing anything.

Does anyone else feel they wouldn't mind the 73 year old No.1 longevity record broken by a more powerful or endearing song? There are countless songs that reached the top that I couldn't stand but I still understood why they hit No.1. They may have been boyband/X Factor/ novelty/charity/ what was in vogue at the time so I could understand why they had a certain mass appeal even if it was only fleeting.

I don’t think any 12 week plus #1 has ever been anything really special though? It sort of comes with the territory being quite Ordinary 😅.

I say 12+ because I think “Dance Monkey” at 11 weeks is the longest running unique #1, whether you loved or hated it.

Would say Bo Rhap is pretty special! And of course the 2 big 90s ones were tied to massive blockbusters so I can see what Ongarboy was getting at in regards to those.

Oh I don’t tend to think of Bo Rhap as counting because its main run was only 9 weeks and the second was a special double A side much later, though from the songs chart point of view it does count.

Guessing Shakira will get it with the new competition on her website - Team Sam/Polydor don’t seem to have put up much of a fight considering what an historic moment it would be for their artist.

I think it's more a sign of the times thing (read: death of the monoculture part 289). The singles market in the 1990s would have been maybe 2-3 million sales per week? Whereas now it's over 30 million units, however the amount needed to reach #1 has stayed roughly the same via the OCC's streams to sales conversion metrics. Every #1 now commands a much smaller fraction of overall consumption than it used to. That might make it sound like the bar for #1 is relatively lower now, yet fewer songs are breaking through to a position where they can get there than ever before. 'Rein Me In' has not had spectacular sales numbers during its weeks at #1, yet for most of that time it has been virtually unchallenged.

Without the exact numbers to hand, I don't think it owes its time at #1 to the same people wanting to stream it over and over more than usual for a chart hit. I just think it's reached a bigger audience than most, for example 'drop dead', which still displaced it for a week and has continued to stream very well, but I would think far fewer people in the UK are aware of its existence in order for it to continue to pick up the odd stream here and there. There's a combination of factors that got 'Rein Me In' in that position, not least benefitting from Olivia (Dean)'s breakthrough from last year into this, and taking the reins(?) as her most visible song when the push for her own singles eased off earlier this year, then a lot of people will have become aware of it through Sam instead, and it's reached a critical mass. As I say the numbers aren't huge, but they don't need to be for 0.2% of the market at best.

I also think there's every chance something else will accumulate as many weeks at #1 during a single chart run ('Last Christmas' will still surely take the all-time record for itself given a few more Christmases to accumulate from) while the current climate persists. 'Ordinary' came close last year and would have at least equalled the record if it had avoided ACR a handful more times, and 'Man I Need' has continued to defy gravity if you take its early move to ACR out of the equation. 'Rein Me In' has had a fair amount of luck on its side to stay on SCR as long as it has, but it has still proved that ACR has not put the record out of reach.
