December 20, 20204 yr 1/3 of the new cases are in London. No wonder it has been shut down. And to think it’s not even a week since Williamson was threatening legal action against some London schools closing. Why is this government so late and inconsistent all the f***ing time?
December 20, 20204 yr And to think it’s not even a week since Williamson was threatening legal action against some London schools closing. Why is this government so late and inconsistent all the f***ing time? The problem is their idelogy is so against lockdowns. All the backbechers and ministers don't want to do anything. I want people to be able to see their families, but this has just reminded me why Christmas Day is the most overrated day of the year. I'm not sure France can stop freight for more than 48 hours, but this is going to be absolute carnage if it continues shorter term. These next few months are going to be really, really rough. If they want a populist measure they should just give everyone a £100 for not leaving their house for non-essential reasons for 4 weeks.
December 20, 20204 yr I think the whole UK now needs to do a six week week lockdown from Christmas Day onwards like NI is doing, but also with schools closed too. Higher fines for breaking restrictions too and at least an attempt at better enforcement. I agree with Priti Patel that yes you should report your neighbours if they appear to be breaking restrictions. A unified whole country approach rather than the tier system might portray better to the public how serious the situation is. And yes NI should ban flights if not from the whole UK from England at least. They probably won't though as Steve said. Edited December 20, 20204 yr by Road Salt Mixer
December 20, 20204 yr Things can still come in, but those trucks (majority Europeans) can't then get back, so likely the absolute majority just won't bother trying
December 20, 20204 yr Author What an absolutely chaotic two days — and it's only going to get worse. @595112367358406656
December 20, 20204 yr Well my Christmas present for my girlfriend might be stuck on the wrong side of the Eurotunnel, and even if it made it through on time I don’t know if they’ll be able to ship goods from England to here before Christmas, so if I’m single by Boxing Day I’m going to invoice Tory HQ.
December 20, 20204 yr Personally, I would still wipe down my groceries with soapy water even if I got a supermarket delivery just to be on the safe side. Anyway, supermarkets should prioritize delivery slots for the elderly and vulnerable I think. Erm are you saying I'm OLD? :o Suppose I am. I had my own old man Smiley over on Haven, with a stick. :D
December 20, 20204 yr The fact there are over 15 countries imposing travel bans on the UK gives a very clear indication of how seriously other countries are taking viral containment. And how badly the UK is managing it. Ideally if the UK government cared it would have voluntarily closed it's own What else needs to happen now to wake this country up? And how badly the UK is managing it. Ideally if the UK government cared it would have voluntarily closed it's own What else needs to happen now to wake this country up? We did the same thing to Denmark. The bigger problem now is we gearing up to Christmas which equals lots of mixing and we don't know enough about the new strain. For all we know this could hamper the vaccine programme. The key now is to understanding the mutation and seeing if the symptoms are different. Let's hope this throws this Tory government over the edge as clearly their own party are going to be going mad now.

The DUP are saying that the people in tier 4 will be restricted anyway so there’s no need 🙄 like the tories they can’t help be dictated by their ideology meaning they’ll never close their links to the motherland..... Totally undermines Dublin closing flights to England.
December 21, 20204 yr Author The new strain's already been found in France. Of course, it'll be everywhere by now because it has been circulating for some time (since September).
December 21, 20204 yr My initial take on the press conference on Saturday was that the government wanted to get people's hopes up for Christmas with the full intention of pulling the plug anyway and had the new strain as their key rationale to support cancelling the rules. They knew about the strain but waited until the 11th hour knowing that it was a big enough reason to justify cancelling Christmas. But I never ever got my hopes up about Christmas mixing anyway so it didn't come as a surprise nor indeed a letdown to me. I'm in tier 4 so can't visit Mum in tier 2. To be honest, it's not so much not being able to see her at Christmas that's the sad part. It's that I'm probably stuck in London for the entirety of 2021 now cos there's zero chance we're moving down a tier until the vast majority of the population is vaccinated. And now there's gonna be even more hesitancy against the vaccine on top of it. Boris Johnson said (once again) things should be more normal by Easter. Which means they categorically WON'T be. That all said I'm still gonna have a special Christmas as it's the first one with my girlfriend who is genuinely the sole reason for keeping me sane this year.
December 21, 20204 yr Think some panic buying has started - when I came out of Sainsbury’s about half hour ago queues to get in and queues of traffic to get in too
December 21, 20204 yr Think some panic buying has started - when I came out of Sainsbury’s about half hour ago queues to get in and queues of traffic to get in too That happens a lot this time of year anyway (I never go to a supermarket during this week for that reason) so either people are going ahead with Christmas plans or you’re right and the panic buying is on.

Yeah I thought that about the time of year, but I think its usually a tad later in the week - I think the closing of the ports etc is making it happen earlier than the usual 23rd Dec/ 24th Dec rush to get stuff
December 21, 20204 yr My folks and I have done an account of the stock in the house and they’re gonna grab a few fresh salad bits we usually get at this time of year but a couple of days earlier than usual in case everyone panic buys all the fresh stuff
