January 5, 20214 yr Didn’t a Tory doner/friend get a contract for those? Wasn’t it Hancock’s mate from the pub?
January 6, 20214 yr Given how disastrous track and trace turned out to be I'm in no doubt the proposed vaccination rollout will somehow be equally disastrous.
January 6, 20214 yr So apparently ‘clap for carers’ returns this Thursday. I will not be participating.
January 6, 20214 yr Author Given how disastrous track and trace turned out to be I'm in no doubt the proposed vaccination rollout will somehow be equally disastrous. You'd hope with the goverment's reputation on the line there would be a more concerted push not to mess things up this time, plus the NHS are more prepared for mass vaccination rollout. I'm hopeful anyway that things will quite quickly ramp up next week, let's face it our route out of these restrictions is entirely dependent on it's success. We are likely to get daily updates next week although let's hope that doesn't become another '100,000 tests/day by the end of May' government stats fudge.
January 6, 20214 yr I think they should also be setting up out of hours vaccinations... I hope they don't cut their nose off to spite their face with the logic of: 1) older + vulnerable need to be done first 2) which means we can only vaccinate in certain hours of the day when they can travel safely If we have capacity to vaccinate 24-7 with shift workers/volunteers, we should do so. I'd happily get a shot at 11pm or 5am.

Your logic may well be the explanation although you have to bear in mind that doubling the number of hours in which people can be vaccinated won’t double the supply. Using existing supplies (and anticipated supplies for the next 2-3 months) to vaccinate people overnight may mean not being able to do everyone in the vulnerable categories as soon as hoped.

Yes the supply could be the hold up, which is out of our control to be fair. We probably need another vaccine to be approved in the next few weeks to help, I think the Johnson & Johnson one is meant to be arriving in Feb, so that's something. The vaccine rollout will work so much better than Test & Trace because it's not being outsourced for the majority and we have experience in large scale vaccination programmes. Of course this one if on another level, but it is being delivered by the NHS. To be fair we are doing a good job, but I think I read somewhere certain venues are excluded (<1000 people). I think they would work better if other venues could be considered, as clearly there are lots of willing volunteers and now the uncecessary red tape for ex-professionals has been removed that seemingly has solved a problem. They have said by mid-February the most vulnerable will have their first shot. Imo the only thing that will stop the programme is when reports come out that people have died after contracting covid despite having the vaccine (which will happen) in some of the vulnerable categories. We will be OK I feel but I do agree back to "normal" by Easter is a pipedream. But I think by May we will be in a really good position providing there are no major hiccups with the supply chain.
January 6, 20214 yr Author I think we knew the 1000/day barrier would be breached this week - another 25K deaths are already 'baked in' even despite the lockdown because of the way this virus operates. Absolutely devastating as well as frustrating. : ( Just watching this documentary that Owen Jones put up, it's making me even more angry. -NUZfFTxALI
January 6, 20214 yr Sadly I expect the numbers will keep increasing until probably the end of the month when the full lockdown will have had a discernible effect... Imagine a lot of them will have been caused directly due to transmission over the Christmas period.

Obviously its best not to risk such a situation though....
January 6, 20214 yr When the Italian death numbers went above the UK's in December, I thought it would take until the end of January before the UK figure pulled ahead again. It happened today :(

The Moderna one has been approved a few hours ago by the EU's European Medicines Agency.
January 6, 20214 yr The Moderna one has been approved a few hours ago by the EU's European Medicines Agency. The Moderna one is not a game changer though, we only have a small amount and it poses the same logistical problems as Pfizer. Numbers are pretty grim but it was to be expected, it's pretty grim all round in Europe. Looks to be levelling off in London at least, although it sounds majorly grim down there by all accounts.
January 6, 20214 yr Just found out that my 1st cousin once removed (my dad's cousin) has died of COVID. He was over 70, and caught it in the hospital after being admitted for a heart issue. I didn't really know him that well, but it's the closest family member to date that has died from it, and I pray to God it's the last.

Certainly grim going by the numbers but you wouldn't think it at all down here. Way more people about than lockdown v. 1 both outside and on public transport. Can't say I've really seen any difference between November lockdown, the current one and the bit in between! Suppose that's part of the problem as to why it's proving so much harder to drive down the infections this time around.

Sounds like there needs to be more of a police presence to try and enforce the lockdown then.
January 7, 20214 yr Sounds like there needs to be more of a police presence to try and enforce the lockdown then. Yeah we've noticed yesterday that this lockdown's nothing like the first one. Almost seems people just going about their business as normal. Told a group of lads off yesterday and was told "oh get a life old man" Central London was like a ghost town before. It's a bit less busy now wife says but not like that. Think people are just fed up now so do what they like. Edited January 7, 20214 yr by common sense
