Born in Stockholm, Sweden in 1983, Loreen -- real name Lorine Zeineb Nora Talhaoui -- first made her mark on the music scene at the age of 21. The singer, who is of Moroccan Berber descent, appeared in the 2004 season of Swedish Idol, performing songs by artists such as the Police, Britney Spears, and Stevie Wonder. Loreen battled her way to the semifinal of the competition before eventually finishing in fourth place. Her single "Euphoria" won Eurovision 2012 and became a hit single all over Europe. Talk about an unexpected career trajectory. In 2007, 23-year-old Calvin Harris released I Created Disco, a cheeky shot across dance music’s bow that presented him as Scotland’s brow-arched answer to LCD Soundsystem. Fast-forward a few years, and the scruffy fellow playing house-party host in the “Merrymaking at My Place” video is suddenly baring oil-slicked abs on Emporio Armani billboards. What happened, of course, is that Harris (born Adam Richard Wiles in 1984) traded up from the Amiga computer of his teens, developed some of the best studio chops in the business with deep-house rollers like 2013's “Thinking About You”, and helped spark EDM’s pop crossover with hits for Rihanna, Florence Welch, Ellie Goulding and others. Along the way, he became one of the 2010s’ first DJ/producer/songwriter polymaths to earn top billing even on the songs in which he didn’t sing. No stranger to pyro-lit main stages—his percussive, synth-strafed 2014 single “C.U.B.A.” is big-room house at its most gargantuan—Harris has resisted getting boxed into any one sound. Ellie Goulding's breakthrough was nothing if not decisive. She rose to stardom in 2010 with her debut album, Lights, which earned the Critics’ Choice prize at the Brit Awards and led the BBC’s “Sound of…” poll. She’s only the second artist to win both in the same year, sharing the honour with none other than Adele. I’m made up for Loreen to get No.2, as I’d have never expected No.1, or for her to outpeak Euphoria, that’s mad, as that seemed crazy unlikely at the time in itself.

 

Two top three hits over a decade apart *.* The biggest Melodifestivalen entry since ABBA’s Waterloo.

 

And this is my favourite UK top two since Smile/Hips Don’t Lie in 2006, astonishing to have trance at the top and Europop at No.2.

It's so disappointing when a song that's been #1 for weeks or months holds off another interesting song that's had an eventful week. I actually like Miracle but was rooting bad for Loreen ugh. New peak for her at least but a #1 looks so much better than a #2 😭
