It was Cliff Richard who first brought up the ageism issue with radio 1 when Millenium Prayer was number one.

The BBC response at the time could be paraphrased as "We're not playing it because it's shite".

Jazzy only 50 copies behind React. I hope she can overtake and stop React from matching the peak of Children or outpeaking Children

I agree they can pick and chose what they play on their playlists, I think if they want to run the official chart countdown they shouldn’t skip a climber or non-mover (or in Cliff’s case a #1) because it doesn’t fit their demographic or target audience.

Give the chart countdown to someone else if their are songs they feel are not a fit to their station.

This.

It was Cliff Richard who first brought up the ageism issue with radio 1 when Millenium Prayer was number one.

A year before that in 1998 he sent a remixed version of his latest single to radio stations under a pseudonym to see if he really was being ignored by radio stations. Many radio stations ended up playing it, including Radio 1. It ended up being his first top 10 hit in 5 years when he eventually released it under his own name.

Millennium Prayer on the other hand, even those of us in the target audience admit it’s terrible.

But 910,000 UK citizens disagree with your point of view.

I think it is brilliant. :D

Really hope that Louise will manage to cling onto the Top 10

P.S. Fantastic post from earlier, gooddelta!

Radio 1 never skipped 'The Millenium Prayer' in the chart countdown (although probably never played the track outside of the show). They played ALL top 40 songs from 1992 until the days of JK and Joel (correct me if I'm wrong) apart for the very rare occasions when a record was too controversial (I think Smash 'I Want To Kill Somebody' met that criteria) or I think they skipped any party songs after the Queen Mother's death.

Why would anyone stream or buy anything by Far Right Said Fred????
Why would anyone stream or buy anything by Far Right Said Fred????

The conspiracists who seem to worship them perhaps would buy or listen to them

So we now base our musical tastes on political leanings?

Would be amazing to see Loreen make the top 10 for a 4th week

The album chart looks like a fun week as well, although streaming numbers still ain’t great

On the theme of ageism, I always remember the interview Pink did where she said her record label took her into a room and basically said ‘ok, so you’re over 30 now, which means radio won’t play you. We need to take a different route.’ She said no and released What About Us…..

The music industry has to get over this obsession with young artists being the only ones that can be relevant. Especially when it comes to female artists. I’m still holding out for Celine Dion to have another massive hit at some point (but then if Ashes can go viral and still not make the top 40, I don’t hold out much hope!)

I do think it can leave a sour taste in the mouth if the musician you love has certain views.

Huge welcome to a new #1, especially DAVE.

What was the last rap song to be #1, has it been a while or am i going mad?

It was Dave himself last year with Starlight.
