December 17, 20204 yr Very sorry to hear that. From what I can perceive people have just accepted that lockdowns are the norm now and will indulge in this Christmas period because if they don't, the lockdown will still happen and they're the ones who will have missed out. I know the old adage goes give people an inch and they'll take a mile so I'm in no doubt the January statistics will make for grim viewing however. Think you're probably right about the uni movement causing spikes again which is scary when you'll have most of the country moving around next week. Also this whole "everything will be back to normal" next year mantra needs to be stopped. It's creating false hope and the government have been doing it all year. I get the need to keep people's morale up but it comes and bites you on the ass when you claim everything will be nearly normal by November and now there's a genuine threat of Christmas being cancelled.
December 17, 20204 yr I’m so sorry to hear about your Dad, Rooney. I’m sure all our thoughts are with you.
December 17, 20204 yr Really sorry to hear about your Dad, Rooney. Puts my problems into perspective, I hope you’re ok. Millions can't work from home though. TV and Radio, delivery workers, warehouse, power, phone, shop workers, nannies who go to other houses, people like my wife who clean houses, the list is endless so where do you start? You’d start, like I said, with education (after medical staff of course) because it is the only place where you’re expected to work without social distancing measures.
December 17, 20204 yr It was sad to read that Rooney about your Dad :( and yes I hope you can get the vaccine soon T Boy if you want it.
December 17, 20204 yr Author Likewise, Rooney I'm really sorry to hear about your Dad. I hope you are ok man! : (
December 17, 20204 yr News today that hospitals are much less busy than this time last year and flu cases have dropped off the map. It's my opinion that the entire media reporting of this is a huge overreaction that distorts the truth of what's going on. Which IS serious, and SHOULD be managed, but also shouldn't be driving the populace into a divided culture of abject fear for some and defiant rebellion from others. Just be honest with people and stop taking the most dramatic angle, media. Have some social responsibility for your place as a factual informer for gods sake. 60k people have died of covid this year, which is awful. But 50k people died of the flu from Nov 2018-Jan 2019 - a third of the time - and that was barely reported. Death goes on all around us, and it's solely the reporting that is making these figures out to be more dramatic a change than we might expect on any given year.

Flu cases are likely to be down because of social distancing. Where did you get your figures from? The ONS figure for winter 2018-19 is only 1,700. The previous winter it was nearly 26,500.
December 17, 20204 yr Author There’s now an Online calculator to tell when people in the UK are likely to get their vaccine. According to this, I’m not likely to get mine until June-September! Hopefully that’s the calculator being very pessimistic! Looks quite good, typed in my Nan's details and it predicts 21st December. She's actually getting her first dose of the vaccine on 23rd!
December 17, 20204 yr Sorry to hear T Boy about your mental health struggles. I must admit, I think as a whole while education is vitally important to children, it is really clear that schools being open is having a massive effect on community transmission. Reading the Tories suing governments over moving to online learning - it's crazy really. We have a huge problem and it is a worldwide problem, but it really does seem as if we either have to close everything and have schools open or we have schools closed and have some things open to balance out the risk. I lost my dad unexpectedly on Sunday and I'd hate for people to give this Christmas up and then have their loved ones die next year. The human cost of this pandemic is cruel, but at the same time you just know we are going to be going in to another 4 week lockdown in January. I hate to be judgemental too but in September/October, the view was that covid was a north problem and not in the south. So maybe the reality is during lockdown, people in south east etc. let their guard down and then that's how the spread started again. Or you have had everyone return home from uni in early December and that's what is helping cause the spread now.. Sorry to hear about your dad Rooney.
December 18, 20204 yr Looks quite good, typed in my Nan's details and it predicts 21st December. She's actually getting her first dose of the vaccine on 23rd! Mine gives mid-April if I just tick diabetes as a health problem.
December 18, 20204 yr Sorry for your loss Rooney. Northern Ireland going into full lockdown after Christmas. All non- essential shops to close from Christmas Eve for 6 weeks, no visiting any other households at all (even within your bubble), and for the first week there's a curfew at 8pm. I know some people are going to struggle with this.
December 18, 20204 yr Are schools remaining open? It’s still being discussed. There’s talk of a staggered start into January, but if they’re closing more or less everything else I can’t see how they can justify keeping the schools open. Will likely have more guidance on this today.
December 18, 20204 yr I am fully expecting a third National lockdown for England aswell to be honest Isn't that both Wales and Ireland locking down after Christmas now?

I find Sky News a bit less depressing to watch than BBC News when it comes to coronavirus coverage. CNN is the grimmest I think but then America is arguably in a worse position with seemingly very little coronavirus controls in many places in the country which are Republican areas. December 18, 20204 yr So helpful of England and Wales to announce remote learning first week in January at the very end of term. We’re now at home trying to figure out logistics for key worker children and remote learning on what was supposed to be the first day of our holiday.
