November 24, 20214 yr Adele could still do 300k, less likely but not impossible. Edited November 24, 20214 yr by Dot Branning
November 24, 20214 yr I guess that albums doing lower numbers is just a consequence of streaming and doesn’t mean that artists are doing way worse than they were 15 years ago. Just as including streaming in the singles chart has seen newer singles way outselling huge hits from 15 years ago and isn’t always an indication of the songs popularity relative to 15 years ago. November 24, 20214 yr Need name change singles chart to the song chart as really songs from albums don’t see many singles seen streaming
November 24, 20214 yr I mean it’s good to keep the name Official Singles Chart for the sake of continuity but really it hasn’t been exclusively one since the download era and certainly hasn’t since streaming began to dominate.
November 24, 20214 yr 219k with streaming data missing is around 225k. Unless there's some other data missing it'll be unlikely that she hits 300k. Looks like she'll get to around 280k. Although I'm hoping that she may do better sales-wise on Wednesday/Thursday. I know ABBA's sales were higher Wed/Thurs last week which let them pass 200k. Hope they same can be said for Adele although she had her ITV special to boost her Sunday.
November 24, 20214 yr and thats the way it is when the market shrinks she'll still do 50% more than ABBA, who did 50% more than Ed Didnt hear this sort of statement during Eds release week!

November 24, 20214 yr Tbf not to deny that hating on Ed Sheeran is a favourite pastime of Buzzjack but we didn't know when he released to what degree his sales were down to his own underperformance and how much it was down to the market having a lower glass ceiling. The ABBA and Adele releases have helped put it in more context.
November 24, 20214 yr No chart update or chart of year on Boxing Day Top of pops Christmas Day special on early 11.55
November 24, 20214 yr sure Ed also was affected by the market shinkrage but also it's not the same doing nearly 300K like Adele than barely beating Coldplay like Ed with 130K sales actually, thinking about it, Coldplay did incredibly well, in their case, it didn't seem like the market affected them
November 24, 20214 yr No chart update or chart of year on Boxing Day Top of pops Christmas Day special on early 11.55 Seems weird not to have a chart of the year. And what a stupid time to have TOTP on...
November 24, 20214 yr It does but I think it should have a massive overhaul any way. No double counting, the only way you can get album streaming sales is by people clicking on the album and playing it directly. Those streams though would be much more valuable and put the emphasis on labels to get people to stream albums and not play lists. Also to not have the same songs on several albums so that they get double counted streams. 100% this. I actually think a stream should only ever be allowed to count as 1 sale per account though it doesn't matter how many times you play a CD its only ever 1 sale.
November 24, 20214 yr Seems weird not to have a chart of the year. And what a stupid time to have TOTP on... Would be good to have End of year chart on New years eve which is a Friday and just a recap of the Christmas infested regular chart?

I assume they sold about half of the long run sales on week 1 and won't reach platinum despite opening with over 100k (the album is at 133k now, so that's +30k in 3 weeks) Edited November 24, 20214 yr by Sour Candy
November 24, 20214 yr 100% this. I actually think a stream should only ever be allowed to count as 1 sale per account though it doesn't matter how many times you play a CD its only ever 1 sale. I think there needs to be a cap or cut off per account especially where singles are concerned. I think for albums though if you did that then sales would really hit rock bottom given then current way it’s calculated. 30 will be cutting it fine to get to 300k, but without knowing her typical daily rate it’s hard to gauge her daily amounts but even so I’m starting to think as well it’ll be more 280k or something. Hoping I’m wrong though. Be interesting to see if she’s managed to claim the whole top 3 in the singles on the next update, did Ariana manage that with the TUN era? I feel like she just missed out.

Take Adele, Ed, Coldplay and ABBA out of the equation selling 39k on its own would be success for any other artist. Edited November 24, 20214 yr by darrens94
November 24, 20214 yr A few things to be said: Firstly congratulations to Adele, although I'm not that keen on her music personally, she's a lovely lady and no one can deny what a great achievement she has made and her popularity is obviously undiminished. Now the flip side of the coin: yes, it won't be putting in the same first week that "25" did. But I dare say the album will eventually end up doing 1m+ so I'm sure her label are more than happy with how it's doing relative to the overall market. Secondly, the overall market: the album isn't a dead format. I've said this a few times but the industry as a whole, much as they did with the singles chart in the 00s between physical singles dying out and downloads becoming the mass norm, simply hasn't worked out how to make them matter. They've let playlisting and passive listening become the norm, to the detriment of the album as a body of work, but it's not beyond saving. I have to say I completely support Adele's decision to remove the shuffle option from her album on Spotify. Call me old school but I like to listen from start to finish when I get a new album, especially if it's a favourite artist of mine because they've taken that time to choose the running order and tell their story for others to connect to it. It'd be like opening a book and starting at Chapter 8, diving to Chapter 15 and then ending at Chapter 1 (oooh, that sounds like a song). I agree with Sammy as well, you should only get album sales by directly selecting the album and playing it directly. I also personally think the amount of streams required to count as a sale for an album should be lowered to 10, 15 at a push. 84 is a ridiculous amount.
November 24, 20214 yr Be interesting to see if she’s managed to claim the whole top 3 in the singles on the next update, did Ariana manage that with the TUN era? I feel like she just missed out. Ariana's 3rd song was at #8, so she missed out by quite a way. No one has actually held the whole Top 3 since the 3-track rule came in - Ed was the last to do it before that with the Divide release! November 24, 20214 yr I think Ed and Justin Bieber are the only artists to ever do it, Drake came close-ish with 3 of the top 5 from both of his last 2 studio albums (2/4/5 and 2/3/5 iirc?) which of course Ed has also done a couple more times since. Would be great if Adele can become the third. Ariana did get the top 3 in the US with the 'thank u, next' era which is arguably even harder to pull off.
