Posted September 24, 20204 yr So I've been listening to my 2000's playlist this morning and came across a few songs that failed to set the charts alight yet still seemed big at the time. It got me thinking of other songs that never quite made it into the top 10 much to everyone's surprise. 01. KT Tunstall - Other Side Of The World Number 13 (2005) YUpbO-mpi74 This was the song that inspired the thread. To my 10 year old self at least, it seemed to be very prominent on radio to the point I assumed it was one of the year's biggest hits. So to find out it only made #121 in the year-end chart is a shock! Plus the fact 'Suddenly I See' charted one place higher was a surprise when I found out. 02. Red Hot Chili Peppers - Can't Stop Number 22 (2002) 8DyziWtkfBw I honestly thought this was one of RHCP's biggest hits until I saw its peak on Wiki. I think my assumptions were based on seeing it A LOT on the likes of Q and Kerrang when I was a kid. The video is very memorable! 03. Linkin Park - Numb Number 14 (2003) kXYiU_JCYtU I think this one would be a shock to anyone who didn't know beforehand. It's a noughties rock classic in my opinion and although I remember it having a lower peak than I originally expected I actually thought it peaked at #10. 04. Stacie Orrico - (There's Gotta Be) More to Life Number 12 (2003) wUOcQnWbk_U Similar to Can't Stop I assumed this was a bigger hit because it's video was played a lot on the music channels back in the day. Or maybe because the video was so memorable I think I saw it more than I actually did. I thought this would've been a #6 hit or something and would've at least peaked higher than preceding single Stuck which I can't recall (Stuck peaked at #9). 05. Fountains of Wayne - Stacy's Mom Number 11 (2003) dZLfasMPOU4 Again, a very memorable video (iconic!) made me think this was a far bigger hit than it was. Plus the song itself was very well known. Everyone knew it, no? I keep thinking this was a low top 10 hit even though I've seen many times it only managed a #11 peak. Please post your non-top 10 shockers below. :kink:
September 24, 20204 yr Can't Stop not even making top 20 let alone top 10 is one of the biggest chart crimes of all time. Steps - 5,6,7,8 is the one that always springs to mind. OK a few years too early but eh :D Edited September 24, 20204 yr by Dobbo
September 24, 20204 yr Tbh RHCP should have had many more top 10's. Hoobastank - The Reason. Was on TV a lot when I wasn't listening to the charts and assumed it peaked at #8 but turns out it peaked at #12! I'm sure I've come across more but that's the only one right now.
September 24, 20204 yr Numb/Encore I actually don't remember from the time despite it being in the top 40 for 18 weeks which was a very long time back then. I might remember the original Numb from the time but I didn't really like Linkin Park or nu metal back then, although I do now. Both versions are very good. Do Your Thing by Basement Jaxx is one of the most surprising. I expected that it had made top 10 as it is one of their most well known tracks but only made #32. There were quite a few dance tracks in the mid 00s which I was surprised charted so low at the time when I rediscovered them on the chart archive much later, as they seemed to be on music channels a lot at the time, such as Little Love by Lil Love and Sunfreakz- Counting Down The Days. September 24, 20204 yr Adele’s Set Fire To The Rain and the two Jason Mraz singles are the ones that spring to mind for me
September 24, 20204 yr Can’t Stop was everywhere at the time. Very low peak and I’m not surprised people thought it was bigger. It is an injustice to this day that KT Tunstall has never had a top 10 single.
September 25, 20204 yr I was just reading the other thread of top 20 hits that missed the top 10 and 'Crying At The Discotheque' stuck out for me! I definitely was aware of that before but forgot until now and it shocked me
September 27, 20204 yr Love generation Bob Sinclair Scarlet independent love song. Alishas Attic I am I feel. Edited September 27, 20204 yr by Feel_The_Fever
September 27, 20204 yr Definitely Scarlet, I actually just felt the need to check the chart run as I was convinced it went top 10!
September 27, 20204 yr I always thought that this had gone Top 10 given the airplay it got on Radio 1 at the time: CDS7C6dCg4k Chart position: #55.
January 3, 20214 yr I always thought that this had gone Top 10 given the airplay it got on Radio 1 at the time: CDS7C6dCg4k Chart position: #55. I have since found out that this WOULD have debuted at No.10 - but apparently there was an error with the CD format, made by the record company, that made it ineligible to chart. This song would have charted fairly high in the UK, but it was released prior to a ruling that CD singles shouldn't contain more than three tracks per format or a total of 20 minutes worth of material if it was remixes, (however multiple CD formats were ok). The label's owner Fatboy Slim was said to be furious when he found out the overlooked mistake by the record company, especially as Space Cowboy was a good friend of his. eu62O65yArg Kosheen definitely deserved to have a few more Top 10 hits. “Harder” (above) peaked at No.53 : ( and “Catch” was lost in the Christmas rush of 2001 to peak at No.15 - it was Christmas number one on my personal chart and the album Resist is a 2000s classic IMO.
January 3, 20214 yr I listened to a lot of dance music in the mid-noughties and I still assume a lot of them were massive hits from how much I heard them, when they didn't make top ten - 'Love Generation' as already mentioned (which was colossal around Europe), Axwell's 'Feel The Vibe' (#16), Freemasons' 'Love On My Mind' (#11) and Joey Negro's 'Make A Move On Me' (#11) all stand out.

Indeed The Box music channel had dance songs on a lot during that time I remember, but yes a lot of dance songs underperformed a bit in the charts even Blue Water by Black Rock should have done better than #36 - great progressive house tune and Groove Cutters - We Close Our Eyes, both these songs I remember on The Box music channel at the time. Freemasons Watchin I also remember on the music channels quite a bit. Even back in 2003 there are three dance hits that should have made top 10 I think Barcelona by D Kay/Epsilon/Mc Stamina, Summer Jam by UD Project and Love Me Right (Shiela) by Angel City. And in 2001 I was surprised to see later on in the chart archive that Alcazar - Crying at the Discotheque only made #14 and in 2002, ATC - Around the World only #15. I know this thread is about the 00s but in 2011-2, some dubstep/drum and bass songs were massive in terms of airplay(mostly on Radio 1) but didn't quite make top 40 eg. Bonfire by Knife Party, Holdin On by Monsta/Skrillex/Nero. And of course in indie back then The Strokes - Under Cover of Darkness really should have made top 40 too I think, it was big in terms of airplay (although if I remember correctly it was a free download for a while so maybe that hampered its ability to make top 40). January 4, 20214 yr Gwen Stefani's 'Cool' always surprises me. The dreaded #11 :drama: I also get shocked to see that 'Fergalicious' wasn't top 10 (I assume it was a cancelled single? - so idk if this counts / similarly Pussycat Dolls - Wait A Minute) Nelly Furtado's 'Try' always feels bigger than #15! I keep thinking it's a #9 peaking single. Going back to Pussycat Dolls... it's criminal that 'I Hate This Part' only got to #12.
January 4, 20214 yr Anastacia's "Not That Kind" (#11) felt like an ubiquitous singalong for the basics at the time, as much as nobody has played it once this decade. Linkin Park have already been mentioned, but I'd also throw "Crawling" into the mix too. Scissor Sisters - both "Take Your Mama Out" and "Laura" felt like bigger hits than the two from that era that actually did make the top 10. I'd guess it's the former one that would earn the most spins these days. Travis "Flowers In The Window", Jennifer Hudson "Spotlight", and Keane "This Is The Last Time" were all hammered by radio as if they had been million-selling #1 smashes.
January 13, 20214 yr I was shocked to find out that Jet - 'Are You Gonna Be My Girl' missed the top 10! It missed the top 20 first time around as well, its #16 peak was a re-release. Mad!
January 13, 20214 yr Probably weren't a big hit then I remember A-Punk by Vampire Weekend being played a lot on the radio.
January 14, 20214 yr Probably weren't a big hit then I remember A-Punk by Vampire Weekend being played a lot on the radio. I remember hearing it loads and thinking it would be huge but it didn’t even chart top 40!
