They were nearly 15k ahead to begin with and Ed is eroding their lead - Westlife will be frontloaded and have minimal streaming uplift, I think it will be close but Ed will get it.

If Westlife are that concerned they’ll roll out a price cut on Amazon to secure the #2 with ease.

Then apparently they are not that concerned cause it doesnt make much difference anyway, but i dont seem to understand how did u do ur calculations and concluded ed will get it... He will only get it if the current rate changes dramatically the last 1-2 days of the week.

Yeah I guess that might explain it although I can think of a few other older Christmas songs that also fit that criteria!

It is compared to other Christmas songs though. In 2012 it was the 5th highest charting Christmas song and has been steadily falling down the rankings since then, finishing as only the 15th highest charting last year. So in that sense it's definitely falling out of fashion.

As recently as 2013 or thereabouts, Wizzard's I Wish It Could Be Christmas Every Day was the third most popular Christmas song behind Mariah and The Pogues. Now it barely makes the top 10 rankings in this category.

No 1-2-3 for Adele then! She likely won't have 3 songs top 5 come Friday in fact.

Gayle looking like she should get to #2? Could be a #1 in the new year!

Amazing sales once again for 30, it looks like it will have no trouble doing over 100k this week!

The fact he would be #6 today if they track hadn’t taken off in the Christmas period :drama:

Yep! I suppose there's still some vague hope it could get Top 5 at the start of new year. I'm not sure what it's current ACR status is or if it would be given a reset.

16 years on and I’m still not over it tbh   The Pussycat Dolls sold 82,193 at #10. 231 copies between them. It’s worth remembering that new releases only had 6 days on sale in the first week.

Top 10 (11th December 2005)

241382 Eminem

132632 Robbie Williams

124647 Westlife

111666 Take That

102947 Madonna

101157 Il Divo

94946 James Blunt

91035 Sugababes

83980 Kelly Clarkson

82193 Pussycat Dolls

Information was unfortunately sparse a couple of weeks later in the Christmas chart:

Top 5:

314553 Eminem

273183 James Blunt

262130 Robbie Williams

235970 Westlife

212322 Take That

132109 Will Young (#13)

64030 Mariah Carey - Greatest Hits (#25)

25687 Mariah Carey - The Emancipation of Mimi (#54)

^ The Top 16 sold 100k+ (Girls Aloud were #17 and apparently sold 99k). Supposedly the Top 98 all sold 10k+. What an amazing time for album sales

That’s unreal, I remember them weeks well but you took the sales for granted then as most people purchased albums as stocking fillers!

Makes you wonder why Adele didn’t just release 30 on Xmas week or the week before and the add few casual sales sales coulda pushed her to 300k!

To be fair, she probably benefits more saleswise from having the weeks leading up to Christmas driving sales.

Slade and Wizzard slipping down the relative chart of Christmas hits in the streaming era is imo probably for the same reason as The Pogues falling from the top 2 to a distant 3rd (maybe even 4th or 5th this year it seems), they're very UK-specific hits which means they don't get the shine on Spotify's biggest Christmas playlists. Considering that they do pretty well to still chart so high each year rather than being entirely crowded out by more international hits. (I know Spotify does have the Christmas Crackers playlist that has more focus on the UK hits, I think they'd be significantly worse off if that playlist didn't exist).

Just checked and 1 year ago Gary Barlow opened with 46K

so quite the drop this time

and a xmas album seems kinda fitting for his fanbase so not sure what went wrong

Has he sold anything since the last update!

Gary sold 1.6 from yesterdays update which is up 200 on the day before. I think he is doing fine for a Christmas album, i didn't expect his sales to come anywhere close to those of his last album and i actually wasn't fully sure if the album would do well so even as it is its doing better than i expected.

I imagine he will get a song on radio 2s alist on Friday and he was on the breakfast show this morning! Should break 20k fingers crossed, the album isnt bad!

Yeah, Christmas albums are usually lower than regular studio albums, but the hope tends to be that it'll give the artist something to promote each year. I don't think going top 5 is bad for a Christmas album, but of course if it has legs next Christmas is more important.
I think the Slade song is atrocious - if you want the 70s Glam rock Christmas sound Wizzard is far better. And pleased it charts higher nowadays

I prefer Shaky Stevens.

Merry Christmas, everyone!

Wizzard is more a bode to Phil Spector!

Then Slades peak was 2000 when it was a generation after release it’s popularity now if obv affected by the generations moving on and the fact it’s not bubble gum pop etc. The recording sounds fine tho, always will be my fav Xmas song!

Ya for most artists Christmas albums don't chart as high as regular studio albums, but i agree i think the hope behind Christmas albums is they pick up sales year on year which builds their sales, Gary could possibly do a re release next year to get more interest but i think he has done well this week.

The singles chart is just awful, decades old Christmas songs and 2 album tracks battling it out to be top 5 this week.
