I'm not really clued up sales of older artists but the biggest modern example i can think of is Taylor swift each era we believe shes peaked but somehow its bigger than the last (even she must be close to peaking now)

In the UK, Fleetwood Mac is an ‘almost’ example. Though ‘Rumours’ remains their big selling album both in the UK and worldwide, they released several albums after ‘Rumours’ before ‘Tango In The Night’ became one of the biggest selling albums of the 80s.

Michael Jackson, off the wall was a very successful album then the follow up went stratospheric!

And in the UK at least, the follow up after that managed to sell more again!

Take That seemed pretty unstoppable in the mid 90s, yet album sales wise they bettered those highs in the 00s with three consecutive studio albums that were all gigantic.

Also Dido’s Life For Rent more or less matched the sales of No Angel, which I wouldn’t have expected at all. Usual rule of thumb is the second album has a far bigger opening week due to pent up hype and then quickly drops off to a far lower total.

I'd be upset if Sam didn't try to get this record. Its 70 years old. Sure the Christmas songs could do it but I feel like the Christmas songs are a chart asterix.

Whitney Houston had one of the best selling albums in the 80s with Whitney but outsold it in the 90s with The Bodyguard soundtrack...while technically not a studio album, it is a Whitney album for all intents and purposes as pretty much no-one bought it for the non Whitney tracks!

Lisa Stansfield's single from it reached #10 and The Soul System's #17 on singles chart so some other songs definitely had some relevance too.

Hmm..I think such fans of those songs would have bought the singles rather thsn the album and were not the reason the album sold over 2 million in UK, 20 million in USA and topped the charts in countless other countries globally...it was the Whitney factor. Its even classified as a Whitney album in the USA for chart purposes..but not in UK..

BTW what does Shakira do on the chart when tournament, England and all football songs are gone.

The examples I can think of - Madonna and Kylie in the 00s - are more repeaks than actually surpassing the previous peaks, only because they were already so massive I suppose. I think Cher and Tina Turner are probably the best examples of artists who actually reached new heights after their initial success waned.

I see Mr. Brightside has reached its highest ever UK Spotify chart positions in recent days...any particular reason?

‘Fever’ was bigger globally than ‘Kylie’ - but in the UK I’d say they were of equal importance. Good shout.

Not sure on the relevance of her age in this discussion.

The song seems to be genuinely popular as other football related songs have faded away, or are slumping down.

Speaking of Mr Brightside, I went to a 90s weekend in Butlin’s and someone asked the DJ to play Mr Brightside and they still did. I thought that the DJ or the person must be getting their decades mixed up. Ask for it at a 00s weekend yeah but that person obviously can’t tell their 90s from their 00s
