September 7, 201114 yr I HATE to dampen spirits but either there was a mistake yesterday, or there's been one today, as I've been sent: Pixie 51k, Sats 41k, Maroon 5 36k To my mind, it's impossible that Pixie would have sold 12k, Maroon 5 10k and the Sats only 3k throughout yesterday, so there must be an error along the line. I only hope it's with todays figures and will be corrected tomorrow, as opposed to Tuesday's figures. Although given how surprised we all were, the latter seems more likely :( :( It's more likely the OCC has removed ALL the Saturdays B-Sides / EPs / physical totals for the midweeks and they'll sort it out at the end of the week. Clearly they get it right in the end, otherwise the record companies would be up in arms, but when it comes to midweeks, the mere existence of a (very low selling) B-Side causes all manner of problems for their computers  Expect the same thing to happen to One Direction on Tuesday - the B-Side will end up appearing at #12 or something, as they'll add the iTunes 2-track sales to it.
September 7, 201114 yr hmm, well that's all a bit mucked up! nonetheless, great to see Snow Patrol just outside the top 10 considering they're still climbing on itunes, they could make the top 10 :D just noticed RITD is back as well  I don't even think that was sung on X Factor this week..
September 7, 201114 yr A good week for the sunday chart prediction thread. Already passed last weeks meagre 7 pages, now 10 pages and still 3 days left of the week. I predict 17 pages by Sunday. This thread could be the '21' of prediction threads :) edit, maybe the '19', found this one from Febuary, 18 pages. http://www.buzzjack.com/forums/index.php?s...hart+prediction Edited September 7, 201114 yr by Olympus
September 7, 201114 yr Just noticed 'I Need a Dollar' by the Saturdays at #34. Obviously it'll merge with the sales for 'All Fired Up' - but as a cover, should it not count towards it's own chart position? Did they not do a similar thing with JLS's cover of 'Umbrella' and more recently the B-side to Noel Gallagher's single - charted at #192 (although not a cover). Cover or not it'll only chart separately if people actually buy it (which no one is).
September 7, 201114 yr Anybody else find it ridiculous that B-sides supposedly count towards a singles sales? THEY ARE DIFFERENT SONGS! -_- Anyway, guessing Pixie Lott has this #1 in the bag.

If you buy the B-Side seperately, it can count seperately in the chart. Using a relevent example, one of Pixie Lott's B-sides, a cover of Use Somebody, was performed on X Factor once, and people downloaded it seperately, and it charted at #41.

So does a B-side only count to a lead single's sales if it's bought in a bundle, like an EP for example?
September 7, 201114 yr So does a B-side only count to a lead single's sales if it's bought in a bundle, like an EP for example? Yes, I think so.

Use Somebody WAS a B-Side but it then got included on her album as an album track (before XF started) so i'm not sure that's a good example. However, Olly 's 'This Ones For The Girls' went to #69 last year as a B-Side.
September 7, 201114 yr So does a B-side only count to a lead single's sales if it's bought in a bundle, like an EP for example?Yup. Though I did read that labels are routinely asking for the B sides to be removed from the chart. That said, if the B side was a version of a previous A side (lead track) then sales will be added to the sale of the old A side / lead track. Live versions and remixes of old lead tracks could then lead to the old track rising back up the chart. The over complication of the rules is probably why the OCC haven't provided an updated chart rules booklet for 2 years...
September 7, 201114 yr Really happy seeing snow patrol up to #11 id love it to go top 10 on sunday, Also really happy that Mel C is climbing, its looking good the album will stay top 40 now.
September 7, 201114 yr I don't know why the OCC make life hard for themselves. Surely if 'Ladykiller' is purchased with the single EP then the sales should just automatically be added to All Fired Up, not chart seperately. However, if 'Ladykiller' is being purchased seperately (ie not with the bundle) then that charts seperately? Their cover of 'I Need A Dollar' which was only available to pre-order (in a bundle) was also in the midweeks in the Top 40 somewhere - does that mean 'I Need A Dollar' was representing the sales for the pre-order bundle? They make life difficult for themselves

It re-entered at a new peak later on because of X Factor, but I think the week it was released with the original single (was it Mama Do?), it charted quite well, in the top 100. Overall, quite a popular B-side. I don't know why the OCC make life hard for themselves. I doubt Ladykiller will even sell enough seperately to chart top 200 this week. Its position from yesterday might've represented something else to do with All Fired Up (e.g. physical sales). September 7, 201114 yr I really hope 1D dont get #1. I like x factor, but its starting to take the piss with the x factor acts getting a number one, and then just dissappearing.
September 7, 201114 yr I think joe has done much better than anyone ever expected, hopefully it can maintain a decent chart run now and build up even more decent sales.

But why would they assign the physical sales to the b-side.. rather than the a-side? (.. which is the one everyone is buying) It just seems like the OCC make their job difficult for themselves.
September 7, 201114 yr But why would they assign the physical sales to the b-side.. rather than the a-side? (.. which is the one everyone is buying) It just seems like the OCC make their job difficult for themselves. Well, to me, they're clearly not deliberately assigning the physical sales (or whatever those sales are) to the B-sides, so they're not making the job difficult for themselves. That's probably just how the data gets given to them. I think every single time this happens, it gets corrected by the Wednesday anyway. Perhaps they don't have time to correct it before they put the Tuesday midweeks out, and to make their own jobs easier, they don't bother and just leave it was given to them? I don't have a clue really, I'm just speculating. Edited September 7, 201114 yr by Eric_Blob
September 7, 201114 yr As a data analyst with plenty of database experience, I'd love to be able to spend a bit of time at the OCC to help sort things out (as long as they could pay me).

How do they get a number one and then just disappear? Think JLS & Olly Murs, Diana Vickers is working on new material, Joe McElderry has had a successful album recently etc But I do agree that Syco/Simon Cowell do focus on the most recent contestants, in terms of promotion.
